Kunle Oluomo has been impeached as the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly



The speaker, Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, was impeached this morning by 18 of the 26 members of the house, causing a ruckus in the Ogun State House of Assembly complex.


The Odeda State Constituency's Hon. Oludaisi Elemide was unanimously chosen by the lawmakers to be the new speaker.


Oluomo was impeached for alleged embezzlement of funds, highhandedness and related offences. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had on September 6, 2022, arraigned Oluomo before a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos over an alleged N2.475bn money laundering.The impeached speaker was arraigned alongside three others: Oladapo Samuel, Adeyemo Taiwo, and Adeyanju Nimota Amoke (now at large) on 11 counts of conspiracy, forgery, stealing, and money laundering preferred against them by the EFCC.


Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), the prosecutor for the EFCC, had informed the court that the accused perpetrated the offenses between 2019 and 2022.


Oyedepo testified in court that they had embezzled N2.475 billion from the Ogun State House of Assembly's treasury.


Nonetheless, Oluomo was given bail so that the trial could continue.
