How Joao Neves Dismantled Arsenal In UCL Final
| Joao Neves’ understated excellence secured PSG’s UCL title defense |
PSG retained the Champions League thanks to Joao Neves. The 21-year-old midfielder’s duels, interceptions, free-kicks and movement broke Arsenal’s rhythm in Budapest.
Why Joao Neves was PSG’s unsung hero in UCL final win over Arsenal...
PSG vs Arsenal in the 2026 Champions League final was more than a trophy match. For Paris, it was a chance to confirm themselves as Europe’s best team. For Arsenal, it was an opportunity to make club history.
It was attack vs defense. Arsenal came in as the competition’s top scorers, while PSG had the best defensive record. In a final played in Hungary, one of those strengths had to give for a new King of Europe to be crowned.
Momentum And Fresh Legs Shaped The Final Build-Up
In finals like this, star players have to step up when it matters most. One match-winning performance often decides whether a team lifts the trophy or falls short.
Arsenal arrived with better momentum. Mikel Arteta’s side went unbeaten in their last six games, winning five and drawing one across all competitions.
Even at the neutral Puskas Arena, Arsenal were listed as the away team. That gave their fans hope - the Gunners hadn’t lost on the road in the Champions League all season, with five wins and two draws before Budapest.
PSG’s form was less dominant: three wins, two draws and one loss in their last six. But Luis Enrique’s squad had a freshness edge. Many key players hadn’t even featured in half of PSG’s 2025/26 Ligue 1 matches, so they came into the final with fewer miles on the clock.
Key Team News And A Final That Delivered Drama
PSG got a lift before kick-off with Ousmane Dembele and Achraf Hakimi both passed fit. The Ballon d’Or winner Dembele and Hakimi being available gave Paris a boost, but no one knew yet who’d grab the headlines - a PSG star or an Arsenal player - until the final whistle.
What followed over 120 minutes plus penalties was a gripping final. Both sides deserve credit for playing their part and keeping fans on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

Mikel reflects on a memorable campaign 👇
Kai Havertz broke the deadlock with a superb finish, making him only the fourth player ever to score in a European Cup/Champions League final for two different clubs. Arsenal’s record was even better - they were unbeaten in 33 games when Havertz scored, 30 wins and three draws, so the signs looked good for the Gunners.
PSG looked far less threatening going forward in the first half. But that wasn’t just poor attack from Paris - Gabriel was outstanding at the back for Arsenal and shut them down.
Gabriel’s Heroics Undone By Shootout Heartbreak.
Gabriel was immense all night. The Brazilian won every aerial and ground duel, made 13 clearances - almost double any other Arsenal player - and recovered possession three times.
So it was cruel that his penalty miss ended up costing Arsenal the trophy.
Declan Rice and David Raya also stood out and could’ve been in the conversation for best on the pitch. But neither matched the influence PSG’s Joao Neves had over the game.
And Neves did it quietly. No flashy moments, just understated control that kept shaping the final.

Neves’ Engine And Awareness Won PSG The Midfield
Joao Neves had the biggest impact on the night. The 21-year-old was PSG’s only starting midfielder to play the full 120 minutes, and as legs tired he kept drifting into pockets of space like it was easy.
He was constantly on the move and comfortable on the ball. Neves thought one step ahead, so he could turn in tight areas and completely take his marker out of the play.
His numbers backed it up. Neves contested 23 ground duels - more than anyone on the pitch - and went for 10 aerials, just two fewer than Havertz’s 12.
Winning most of those duels showed his fight. He also won possession back six times. Only Achraf Hakimi did it more, with seven.
He also won seven free-kicks, more than any other PSG player - none of his teammates won more than one. Those fouls broke up Arsenal’s rhythm at key moments, especially when the Gunners looked like they were gaining control.
Neves tried three tackles, the most of any PSG player, and won two of them. That matched the best tackle count from anyone else on the pitch. He also made two interceptions, more than any other Paris player.
Neves matched Dembele for shots on target with four each - the most of any PSG player. He also had 11 touches in Arsenal’s box, the highest of anyone on the night.

His passing wasn’t perfect - 87.5% completion put him among just three PSG outfielders under 90%. But his work off the ball more than made up for it.
It was the kind of performance that flew under the radar, but it was probably the one that helped PSG become only the second team in Champions League history to defend their title.
