Gabon Is Set To Announce President Ali Bongo As Winner Of The 2023 Presidential Elections
President Ali Bongo is running for a third term after serving two terms of seven years each.
From 1967 to 2009, Omar Bongo, Ali's father, ruled with an iron fist. His son, who was the defense minister at the time of his death, succeeded him as president and has held that position ever since.
19 people were scheduled to compete for president in this election up until last week.
However, on August 18, a coalition called Alternance 2023 was unexpectedly formed by six candidates, who chose independent candidate Albert Ondo Ossa as their joint nominee.
"Gabon is not the property of the Bongos," he said after the announcement.
In addition to blocking international observers and journalists from covering the elections, the government reportedly shut down the internet, deleted candidate names off ballot papers, and delayed the arrival of electoral officers at the polls.
Even if his paralysis is getting worse, Ali Bongo is fervently seeking a lifetime presidency.
This is an African democracy.
