CANCER RATES IN NIGERIA ARE EXPECTED TO RISE AS A RESULT OF INDOMIE NOODLES, ACCORDING TO NICRAT

The National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) has voiced worry about the reported presence of ethylene oxide in Indomie Instant Noodles 'Special Chicken Flavour.'

Following an investigation by Malaysian and Taiwanese authorities, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) raised the alarm.

On Tuesday, Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye affirmed that Nigerian noodles are safe to consume.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, NICRAT Director General Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu praised NAFDAC for its rapid intervention and the launch of an investigation.

According to Aliyu, "Nigerians should expect an increase in various cancers in the months or years ahead," depending on how long they have ingested the contaminated product.

According to the NICRAT DG, 78,000 individuals died as a result of cancer-related problems in 2020 alone (34,200 men and 44,699 women).

The carcinogenic component is also employed as a fumigant for cleaning culinary goods, spices, and medical equipment, particularly those affected by heat sterilization.
