UK GOVERNMENT APOLOGIZES TO PETER OBI FOR HIS BAD IMMIGRATION TREATMENT
The government of the United Kingdom (UK) has apologized to Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Labour Party in the recently concluded 2023 elections, for his illegal arrest and harsh treatment at Heathrow Airport in London last week.
The apology came after a British immigration official said he gave Mr. Obi a detention notice in error while looking for a guy who impersonated him in order to conduct perjury, forgery, and identity theft in the nation.
The unfavorable treatment meted out to the former Governor of Anambra State was deemed "totally unacceptable" by British officials.
"Frankly, the Immigration Official's action - has been appalling - and we are sorry." Immigration authorities apologised.
The British High Commission in Abuja, through Dean Hurlock, the head of the media unit, stated that the mission does not comment on such situations.
On April 7, 2023, Obi was reportedly stopped and grilled for hours by immigration officers at Heathrow Airport in London.
Diran Onifade, the Chief of Obi-Datti Media Office, confirmed the incident in a statement made on Wednesday in Abuja, the nation's capital.
According to the Obi-Datti media office, the former Anambra State Governor was wrongfully jailed for crimes allegedly committed by an impostor who is still at large.
According to the statement, the impersonator of Obi may commit different offences, leading to the arrest of the LP flagbearer in the United Kingdom for duplication.
Part of the statement reads: "The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi just back from London, United Kingdom where he celebrated Easter, has confirmed that he was harassed by London immigration officials and placed in detention but for the spontaneous reaction of Nigerians at Heathrow Airport.
