PAST MEMBERS OF THE NASS PUSH FOR A SOUTH-SOUTH SENATE PRESIDENT

The Initiatives, an agenda-setting college of past and sitting National Assembly members, has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee (NWC) to zone the Senate presidency to the country's South-South geopolitical zone as a matter of equity.

They also asked the ruling party to support Senator Godswill Akpabio, the former governor of Akwa Ibom State, for the number three post in Nigeria.

The Dean of The Initiatives, Rt Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, stated at a world press conference on Thursday in Abuja that the legislature is a quality institution that requires the leadership of individuals with expertise and pedigree.

He believes the former Akwa Ibom State governor is the most qualified and eligible person to lead the Senate, citing his accomplishments in the state and other posts he has served in the past.

Noting that the APC Muslim/Muslim ticket for the president has sparked controversy, Eyiboh declared that it would be unjust for only one faith to hold the highest offices in a country like Nigeria.

Although the organization admitted that zoning is not a constitutional problem, they contended that their demand was an attempt to redress social inequality. They argued that the Senate President should be a Christian, preferably from the South-South geopolitical zone.

The group also stated that the South-East has held the office of Senate President for years in a row, and given that the nation's president-elect is from the South-West, it is only reasonable that the job of Senate President be assigned to the South-South for equity, justice, and fairness.

According to Eyiboh: "While we all are canvassing that the Senate President should go to the South, I hasten to say that it shouldn't be a case of an aircraft that has lost contact with the control tower. We are saying that the position should be micro-zoned to the South- South."

Eyiboh said: "Ken Nnamani was a Senate President from Enugu, [there was] Chuba Okadigbo from Anambra, Evans Enwerem from Imo, Anyim Pius Anyim from Ebonyi and Adolphus Wabara from Abia. It was time for the position to go to South-South."

He further said: "The presidency of the Senate at this particular time requires someone who has the capacity and the integrity like former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio."

The group also stated that the South-East has held the office of Senate President for years in a row, and given that the nation's president-elect is from the South-West, it is only reasonable that the job of Senate President be assigned to the South-South for equity, justice, and fairness.
