LASEMA SAID 6-STOREY BANANA ISLAND BUILDING COLLAPSED CAUSED BY A HEAVY-DUTY TRUCK
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) attributed the collapse of the 6-storey building in Banana Island in the Ikoyi area of Lagos which was still under construction to a heavy-duty truck that ran into the building.
The Lagos State Government had earlier stated that the building which is at 1st Avenue of Banana Island did not have approval.
According to LASEMA, a heavy-duty truck caused the 6-story Banana Island building to collapse.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) blamed a heavy-duty truck that crashed into the 6-story structure on Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos, which was still under construction.
The Lagos State Government had previously indicated that the development on Banana Island's 1st Avenue lacked authorisation.
This information is contained in a statement released by LASEMA and is available on its Facebook page. where it was said that fortunately no lives were lost.
According to LASEMA, recovery operations are underway, as are measures to rebuild the building from the ground up in order to prevent further incidents.
Its statement is as follows: "Situation report on the collapsed building at 1st Avenue, Banana Island, Ikoyi."
"Upon the arrival of the LASEMA Response Team at the scene of the incident, a six-storey building under construction was found to have collapsed.
"Information gathered revealed that the building collapsed, as a result of a truck that ran into the building.
"Fortunately, no loss of life, however, efforts are ongoing to reconstruct the building to ground zero so as to forestall any secondary incident.
"Recovery operations ongoing."
In case you missed it, the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development acknowledged the collapse of a "unapproved" 6-story structure under construction in the state's Banana Island, Ikoyi neighborhood on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.
The structure was said to have fallen, with some workers perhaps trapped beneath the rubble.
It was also said that the event occurred on First Avenue, an elite neighborhood home to some of Nigeria's wealthiest citizens.
Tayo Bamgbose-Martins, the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, immediately went to the scene to examine the situation and launch an investigation.
The ministry urged the public to "stay calm and await more information from the ministry as we learn more."
