The Federal Government did not, as promised, begin the evacuation of trapped Nigerians from conflict-torn Sudan on Tuesday.

Geoffrey Onyeama, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated on Sunday that the evacuation will begin on Tuesday.

Hundreds of people have been slain in Sudan's capital since the crisis erupted 10 days ago between the soldiers of the two competing generals.

According to Onyeama, more than 80% of Nigerians in Sudan are students.

According to reports, Abubakar Babangida, President of the National Association of Nigerian Students in Sudan, stated that the evacuation of trapped Nigerians in the turbulent country has not begun.

While grumbling about the poor communication network in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, Babangida stated that he was unsure when the stranded Nigerian students would be evacuated.

He did, however, accept that the Nigerian government was working to rescue the stranded students.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government revealed the numbers for the evacuation of Nigerians stuck in Sudan on Tuesday.

Geoffrey Onyeama and Sadiya Faruk, Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, respectively, issued a joint statement urging parents to counsel their children to be calm while concerted efforts were undertaken to rescue all Nigerians stuck in Sudan.

The statement, signed by the permanent secretaries of the two ministries, also asked Nigerian students to keep in touch with the Nigerian Embassy in Sudan for future instructions.

Given the risks involved, the statement recommended all Nigerian nationals to avoid making the perilous journey to the borders on their own.

"Nigerian Embassy officials in Sudan can be reached through the following numbers: +2348035866773, +249961956284, +2348063636862, +249961956274, and +2349066663493," the statement added.
