Holy Saturday saw Pope Francis officiate at the joyous Easter Vigil in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, which celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The event was attended by about 8,000 spectators, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.

In his homily, the Pope condemned the "icy winds of war" and the "rampant injustice" that he said prevailed in the world.

The Pope emphasized that Easter, however, inspires and offers people hope.

"It motivates us to move forward, to leave behind the sense of defeat, and to look to the future with confidence because Christ is risen and has changed the course of history," the pontiff said.

Pope, who spent last week in the hospital with bronchitis and had knee problems, entered the altar in a wheelchair and remained seated the whole Mass.

At the Mass, he baptized eight adults, including three from Albania, two from the United States, one from Italy, one from Nigeria, and one from Venezuela.

On Easter Sunday morning, the Pope is anticipated to celebrate the Easter Sunday Mass in St. Peter's Square.
