NASS HAS FORWARDED THE PEACE CORPS BILL TO BUHARI FOR APPROVAL

After passage by both the Senate and the House of Representatives, the National Assembly has delivered the harmonised version of the Nigerian Peace Corps (Establishment) Bill to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent.

According to reports on Thursday, the measure was transmitted for Presidential assent on Wednesday by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Sani Magaji Tambuwal, via a letter drafted to that effect.

According to a highly placed insider in the National Assembly, the letter was prepared on the clerk's letterhead, dated April 12, 2023, and addressed directly to President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the source, three authenticated copies of the bills were given to the President for assent, one of which is expected to be held by him and the other two returned to the National Assembly for further action.

According to the terms of the 1999 Constitution, President Buhari is anticipated to consent to the bill on or before May 11, 2023, when the 30-day window for such crucial action must have been used.

Over the years, Nigeria's existing Peace Corps has operated on a volunteer model. Once the measure is signed by the President, the corps would be a Federal Government-owned and sponsored entity known as the Nigeria Peace Corps.
