LAW TO PREVENT HEALTH PERSONNEL FROM MIGRATING IS ILL-CONCEIVED – DIASPORAN DOCTORS

Nigerian doctors in the Diaspora have reacted to a popular National Assembly bill aimed at reducing brain drain in the country's health sector.

According to reports, the House of Representatives has begun working on a bill sponsored by Ganiyu Johnson that seeks to modify the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria Act.

As a result, the measure would require Nigerian-trained medical and dental practitioners to work in Nigeria for at least five years before being granted a full license.

Practitioners in the health business have criticized the law, which has passed its second reading.

Diaspora Medicine responded to the contentious bill on Tuesday.

In a response to the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, associations stated that the measure would not curb the flight of health personnel from Nigeria.

The National Democratic Forum of South Africa (NDF-SA) and four other association leaders stated that the Federal Government's current attempt through the proposed bill would be counter-productive.

Poor remuneration and deplorable working conditions, among other things, are cited by the organisation as reasons why Nigerian health workers are fleeing the nation.

"Young professionals leave the country in search of better opportunities. Many are frustrated by the consequences of governance failures that have progressively worsened over the past 30 years. The unfortunate reality is reflected in our healthcare. The system is in a state of serious neglect; training and career development opportunities are limited, further impairing earning potential. Insecurity is rampant. Equity and justice is lacking for the average Nigerian," the group stated.

The group advocated for a comprehensive solution to Nigeria's health-care crisis.
