PDP LOSES SOKOTO BUT WINS AKWA IBOM AND OYO, WHILE THE APC WINS SEVEN STATES
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has begun the announcement of final results following Saturday's governorship election in two Federation states.
MON DIARIES, reports that the compilation of results is still occurring in certain states at the time of filing this report.
Nonetheless, in several states, the election umpire has released results, despite protestations from the losing political parties.
The electoral results reveal that the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has increased its dominance in the country. The party has now expanded to include Sokoto.
Oyo State: Governor Seyi Makinde was re-elected for a second term after winning in all 33 of the state's local government districts.
The PDP governor received 563,756 votes, outnumbering the All Progressives Congress (APC) contender, Senator Teslim Folarin, who received 256,685 votes.
Kwara State: The ruling APC has kept control of the state of Kwara. Former governor Bukola Saraki's efforts to restore the PDP to power failed. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulrmRazaq received 226,956 votes, while Peoples Democratic Party candidate Alhaji Shuabu Yaman received 123,118 votes. The APC defeated the PDP in all of the state's local government areas.
Gombe State: Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya has been re-elected for a second term. Yahaya of the All Progressives Congress (APC) received 342, 821 votes, defeating Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Jibrin Barde, who received 233, 131 votes.
Sokoto State: After several years, Ahmed Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has ousted the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in far-flung Sokoto States. In one of the major upsets, Aliyu received 453, 661 votes to defeat PDP's Saidu Umar, who received 404, 632 votes.
Yobe State: The APC won another poll in the Northern State, with incumbent Gov Mai Mala Buni declared the winner. Buni received 317,113 votes, defeating Alhaji Sherif Abdullahi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who received 124,259 votes.
Jigawa State: The APC has produced a governor-elect in Jigawa in the person of Umar Namadi Dammodi. He received 618,449 votes, defeating the PDP candidate, Lamido Mustapha Sule, who received 368,726 votes. Dammodi succeeds Governor Badaru Abubakar.
Katsina State: President Muhammdu Buhari's home state has also been retained by the APC. Dr Dikko Umar Radda, a former SMEDAN Director General and APC governorship candidate, won with 859,892 votes, while Yakubu Lado (PDP) received 486,620 votes.
Akwa Ibom State: Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom has succeeded in having his preferred successor elected. Mr Umo Eno of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defeated the Young Peoples Party (YPP) to retain the state for his party. Eno defeated Sen. Bassey Akpan of the Young Progressive Party in 29 of the state's 31 local government units (YPP). He received 354,348 votes, while YPP candidate Akpan received 136,262 votes.
Lagos State: Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has been proclaimed the winner of the state's governorship election. The incumbent Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, received 762,134 votes to defeat the Labour Party's Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, who received 312,329 votes, and Abdulazeez Adeniran of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who received 62,449 votes. The Labour Party, on the other hand, claims it won the election.
Some states, including Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Kaduna, Delta, Borno, Kano, Ebonyi, Enugu, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Plateau, Rivers, and Zamfara, have yet to complete collation and final declaration.
Although collation was completed in Enugu State on Sunday night, the commission postponed further action until Monday morning due to objections about the results of the Nkanu East and Nsukka LGs. The commission requested written petitions in order to conduct an assessment of the results of the contentions.
