2023 NIGERIA ELECTIONS: UN CALLS FOR ADHERENCE TO PEACE TREATY
On Wednesday in Abuja, a peace agreement regarding the general elections of 2023 was signed by all 18 political parties.
All parties must agree to accept the results of the elections under the terms of the accord, which was arranged by the National Peace Committee, or NPC.
If there are grievances, it is assumed that they will be addressed by legal channels.
Dujarric acknowledged that UNOWAS, the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel, had engaged in political activities.
A senior official, according to her, is in touch with the NPC Chair and is "ready to leverage good offices to support quiet diplomacy efforts to urge key actors to respect their commitments."
The primary candidates, opposition leadership, and institutions have already been contacted by UNOWAS and the Office of the Resident Coordinator.
The News Agency of Nigeria in New York was informed by UN Spokeswoman Stephane Dujarric that the international organization supports the agreement.
