IKE EKWEREMADU'S WIFE AND DAUGHTER PRESENT IN COURT TODAY
Police accuse Sonia of bringing a homeless man into the UK and trafficking him for the purpose of obtaining his organs, and Ekweremadu's wife and daughter are present in court today
Today, November 7, Ike Ekweremadu's daughter appeared in a UK court to respond to allegations that she brought a homeless man into the nation illegally in order to obtain his organs for herself.
Ekweremadu and his wife Beatrice were detained in June of this year and have since been on trial with their doctor, Obinna Obeta, for charges involving conspiracy to set up another person's travel with the intention of taking advantage of him and harvesting his organs.
They are accused of conspiring to arrange the travel of a 21-year-old man named David Ukpo Nwamini with the intention of abusing him between 1 August 2021 and 5 May of this year, together with unnamed third parties and another family member Isaac Ekweremadu. They are accused of arranging for him to come from Lagos to London in order to have one of his kidneys removed and donated to their daughter Sonia, who has a kidney condition and has been receiving dialysis for some time.
In court today, the prosecutors assert that Nwamini's organ was to be harvested for Sonia. The young man, who had previously been homeless and living on the streets of Lagos, showed up at the Staines police station and claimed to be a victim of trafficking, the prosecutors informed the court. The Ekweremadu's and their doctor were then detained.
Nwamini allegedly admitted to police officers that he had arrived in the UK on February 20 and had been transported to the Royal Free Hospital for tests—none of which he had given his approval for. Nwamini claimed that after these tests, he went back to the residence where he had been staying and was "treated practically as a slave." He allegedly ran away from the address and lived on the streets for three days before calling the police.
Both Mr. Ekweremadu and his physician are being detained in HMP Belmarsh and HMP Wandsworth, respectively. They did not show up today in court. At a hearing in July, Mrs. Ekweremadu was given bail; today, she appeared in court with Sonia.
