NIGERIA MAY BE STRIPPED OF COMMONWEALTH GAMES GOLD
Tobi Amusan and others may lose Commonwealth gold after a member of the relay team fails a drug test
Nigeria could be stripped of the gold medal in the women's 4x100m relay at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham if an unnamed member of the quartet fails a doping test.
Tobi Amusan, Rosemary Chukwuma, Favour Ofill, and Grace Nwokocha made up the gold-winning team.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria was informed of the development by the World Anti-Doping Agency, as the confirmation of the B sample is still pending.
If the athlete is not exonerated, the team will be stripped of the medal and performance.
According to reports, AFN president Tonobok Okowa confirmed the report this morning.
He stated that the federation had begun an investigation and would make its position known.
"The World Anti-Doping Agency letter arrived at the federation today (Friday), and we are shocked to hear it for the first time. We risk losing the gold medal we won in the 4x100m relay at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham "Okowa stated.
"However, we will conduct our investigation." Although an athlete is accountable for anything related to doping, this is not a positive development for us."
The AFN president, on the other hand, refused to name the athlete involved, saying the AFN would issue a public statement after its investigation was completed.
"No, I can't reveal the athlete's identity right now because we need to confirm exactly what happened and reach a conclusion on our findings before making a public statement."
"The matter is still under investigation and has not yet been confirmed. What we received was a notification letter, so that everyone involved could prepare for their defense," AFN head coach Seigha Porbeni explained.
This comes just days after young high jumper David Aya failed a drugs test at the World Athletics Junior Championships in Cali, Colombia, last month
