MAN SENTENCED TO 21 YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR DEFILING HIS DAUGHTER FOR 12 YEARS AND IMPREGNATING HER IN LAGOS

A Lagos Special Offences Court in Ikeja sentenced Akin Isaac, 52, to 21 years in prison for defiling and aborting his 18-year-old daughter's pregnancy for 12 years.

According to reports, the convict began having sex with his daughter when she was six years old. Following his plea bargain application on April 21, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo sentenced the convict to 21 years in prison.

"In light of the defendant's guilty plea to one count of defilement, hereby find the defendant guilty as charged," Justice Taiwo said. Following his conviction, the judge asked the defendant if he had anything to say.

The convict knelt in the dock and begged forgiveness, explaining that he had an elderly mother to care for.

Justice Taiwo then sentenced him to 21 years in prison, with the sentence to begin in June 2020, when he was arrested. Due to how emotional the survivor was while giving her testimony, the judge had previously asked State Counsel, Mrs Omowumi Bajulaye-Bishi, if the 21-year plea bargain was sufficient for the convict.

"I recall the survivor vividly. She was sobbing inside the box. Abortion, pregnancy, drugs, beeting, and other inhumane treatment meted out by her own father? Do you believe 21 years is sufficient for him? "The judge inquired.

Bajulage-Bishi informed the court in her review of facts dated July 6 that the convict applied and decided to change his plea, resulting in the information against him being amended to the offence of defilement. According to the prosecutor, the defendant began having illegal sexual relations with his 18-year-old daughter when she was six years old, which resulted in at least one pregnancy.
