IN OYO, 20 PEOPLE ARE KILLED WHEN TWO VEHICLES COLLIDE

According to police and an official, at least 20 passengers were killed when a bus collided with another vehicle and caught fire in Oyo state on Saturday.

The accident at Lanlate in Ibarapa area of the state on Friday, was described as "...a fatal accident. We counted over 20 human bodies burnt completely," Gbenga Obalowo, the chairman of Ibarapa said.

"They had a head-on collision, and the two vehicles... that were both transporting passengers caught fire and were burnt beyond repair," he explained.

He claimed that two people "with severe burns" survived the crash and were taken to the hospital.

A senior police officer in the state confirmed the crash, saying that "20 people died in the accident," without providing further details.

Obalowo blamed the accident on reckless driving and speeding.

Thirty people were killed in July when three vehicles collided on a highway in Kaduna state.

According to the road safety commission, Nigeria had 10,637 road accidents last year, which claimed 5,101 lives and injured over 30,000 people.
