Porto Get Off The Mark In Champions League With Dominant Win Over Napoli

Porto Vs Napoli
Veiga stars as Porto thrash Napoli to claim first UCL win

It was the night Porto's Champions League campaign finally came alive. Napoli briefly threatened to spoil the party, but once Gabri Veiga took over, there was only ever going to be one winner in a ruthless 4-1 rout.

Porto earn first Champions League win of the season with dominant display against Napoli...

Porto finally stopped their Champions League slide, as Jan Bednarek got the scoring started in a commanding 4-1 victory over Napoli to claim their first points of the campaign.

Pepe thought he had given Porto the lead in the fourth minute, smashing a superb finish in off the crossbar from a tight angle, only for the offside flag to rule it out.

That was an early warning for the visitors, and another one followed soon after, with Borja Sainz's curling effort clipping the top of the bar on its way over.

There was no third escape for the Italians, as Bednarek was left completely unmarked from a corner and nodded a simple header past Alex Meret to open the scoring in the 11th minute.

Rasmus Hojlund was one of Napoli's liveliest players in the first half, and he almost scored from a solo counter-attack, driving through several challenges from the halfway line before seeing his effort deflected just wide.

Kevin De Bruyne then became the second player to be denied by the assistant referee's flag, finding the net from an offside position.

Having gradually grown into the game, the visitors got a deserved equaliser before the break, as Scott McTominay smashed home an emphatic finish after a double save from Diogo Costa.

McTominay has now scored seven times in his last nine Champions League appearances, making him the all-time leading Scottish scorer in the competition.

The home side regrouped at half-time, and Gabri Veiga tested Meret with a shot from the edge of the box in the first real attack of the second half.

Matteo Politano then failed to sort his feet out from a Porto cross, and the ball dropped to Pablo Rosario six yards out, but he could not squeeze it past the goalkeeper from close range.

As the pressure mounted, Veiga came agonisingly close to a stunning goal, unleashing an absolute rocket against the crossbar with Meret well beaten.

There was no surprise over who got the goal when it finally came, as Veiga burst beyond the defence and slid the ball through Meret's legs to restore the lead.

Having offered very little in the second half before going behind, Napoli struggled to get going, and Samu should have settled the contest when he broke free on the counter.

Jakub Kiwior did the job instead, as the Partenopei were undone from another corner 10 minutes from time.

And things went from bad to worse for the Neapolitans when Rafa Marin was shown a straight red card for hauling Samu down in the box in the 89th minute, only for the striker to pick himself up and convert the resulting penalty.

The result is a timely lifeline for Porto, marking their first win in their last seven meetings with Italian opposition (D3, L3).
