Rune crashes out of Paris Masters as Paul serves up masterclass

After reaching Basel quarter-finals post-injury, Holger Rune falls to Tommy Paul in Paris Masters first round, next heads to Stockholm ATP 250.

Tommy Paul ended Holger Rune's comeback run with a reality check at the Paris Masters...

After Rune reached the quarter-finals in Basel following his long layoff with an Achilles tendon injury, Paul brought the Dane back down to earth with a 7-5, 6-4 first-round win in Paris.

Rune, 23, crashed out of the ATP 1000 event on Tuesday, losing 5-7, 4-6 to the American, who served superbly and kept his unforced errors to a minimum.

Rune produced moments of brilliance, particularly under intense pressure, but made twice as many unforced errors as his opponent.

World No.14 Paul, 29, is the highest-ranked player Rune has faced since returning from his 11-month injury layoff.

In their first ever meeting on the ATP Tour, the match showed that Paul is currently operating at a higher level than Rune.

The first set was largely dominated by serve, with both players strong on their own delivery and Paul looking almost untouchable.

Until Paul led 6-5 and 40-0, Rune had won just three points on the American's serve. Moments earlier, Paul had taken one of only two break points in the set, punishing a loose, error-filled service game from the Dane.

But with his back against the wall, Rune finally found an opening. The Dane showed grit and agility to save three set points and create two break chances of his own, before Paul steadied himself with a couple of aces to close out the set.

The second set produced tighter contests, but once Paul broke for a 2-1 lead, the match tilted decisively in the American's favour.

Like in the first set, he served more effectively and committed fewer unforced errors than Rune, meaning chances for the Dane to claw his way back were few and far between.

Paul then broke again to lead 5-2, leaving Rune looking crestfallen. Yet just as all hope seemed lost, Rune rallied, saving a match point and converting the first of two break points to cut the deficit to 3-5.

He closed the gap further to 4-5, but Paul held firm in the next game, converting his second match point to seal victory. Rune will now turn his attention to next week's ATP 250 event in Stockholm.
