Dortmund edge out Betis to end their perfect start to the League phase...
Borussia Dortmund stretched their unbeaten run in all competitions to six matches with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Champions League surprise package Real Betis, who dropped points for the first time in this League Phase.
Despite competing in only their second-ever campaign in Europe's premier club competition, Real Betis had made a flying start by winning all three of their opening League Phase matches.
Dortmund’s formidable home record in the Champions League meant a fourth straight win for Betis was never going to come easily, and the hosts wasted little time in showing their intent down the right flank.
Julian Ryerson whipped an early ball into the six-yard box that Serhou Guirassy failed to turn goalward, before the same combination found Daniel Svensson unmarked just yards out, only for Alvaro Valles to produce a stunning reflex save to keep his effort out.
Betis had also threatened on the counter in between those chances, with Troy Parrott breaking away and teeing up Antony to finish, only for an offside in the build-up to deny them the opener.
Little more was created by either side before the break, with Dortmund dealt a further blow when talismanic striker Guirassy was forced off through injury.
The mood inside the Westfalenstadion changed in an instant just after the restart, as Dortmund finally found the breakthrough they desperately needed.
Jobe Bellingham met Ryerson’s low cross with a first-time effort that Valles managed to toe away, but Fabio Silva reacted quickest to the rebound and powered it home to put his side in front.
Betis refused to lie down, however, and levelled things up 20 minutes later when a Dortmund mistake allowed Abde Ezzalzouli to pick out Aitor Ruibal from the left, with the substitute finishing back across goal on his first-ever Champions League appearance.
Valles produced another strong save moments later, but Betis were only able to hold onto parity for five minutes.

Silva then turned provider, feeding Guirassy’s replacement Konstantinos Karetsas, who shifted the ball onto his left foot and caught Valles out with a powerful low strike that crept inside the near post for his first BVB goal since his summer arrival.

Dortmund then saw the game out with little fuss, extending their remarkable record to just two defeats in their last 25 home Champions League matches. Betis, meanwhile, remain without a win against German opposition this century, but are still well placed to reach the knockout stages.
