Borussia Dortmund Edge Sabah To End Winless Run In UCL
Serhou Guirassy struck twice, including a decisive second-half volley, as Borussia Dortmund edged past a spirited Sabah side 2-1 in Baku to end their three-game winless run and claim just their third win in seven Champions League matches.
Guirassy brace sees Dortmund past Sabah in Champions League...
Borussia Dortmund returned to winning ways after three games without a victory in all competitions with a narrow 2-1 triumph over Sabah at the Baku Olympic Stadium in the UEFA Champions League.
After being held to a goalless draw by Union Berlin in the Bundesliga last time out, Dortmund were eager to make a fast start in front of goal.
Fabio Silva looked lively early on, twice being thwarted by Stas Pokatilov, while Serhou Guirassy fired an effort over the bar.
The latter finally broke the deadlock inside the opening 10 minutes, pouncing on the rebound after Pokatilov failed to hold Felix Nmecha's initial strike.
Dortmund kept up the pressure, but Pokatilov came to Sabah's rescue again with a superb double stop, first tipping Veerman's free-kick away and then blocking Chukwuemeka's effort on the rebound.
Sabah grew into the game after that and thought they had drawn level after 30 minutes when Joy-Lance Mickels curled a stunning effort into the top corner, only for the celebrations to be cut short by a marginal offside flag.
Their persistence paid off before half-time, however, as Aden McCarthy rose to head home Puchacz's free-kick to score his first goal for the club and bring the hosts level.
Momentum swung further as Kaheem Parris forced a smart save from Gregor Kobel.
Dortmund reasserted control after the interval, though, and it wasn't long before they edged back in front.
Veerman delivered a cross to the back post, where Guirassy was perfectly placed to bury a side-footed volley - his fourth goal of the competition this season, already equalling his tally from the previous campaign.
Undeterred by falling behind for a second time, Sabah continued to push forward, with Mickels the next to test Kobel from distance.
Chances came and went for both sides late on, as Silva squandered the opportunity to add to his four goals this season when firing wide through on goal, before substitute Orphe Mbina blazed off target from a similar position at the other end.

In the end, Dortmund held firm to secure a narrow victory, only their third in seven Champions League outings this term.
For Sabah, the defeat ended their perfect home record in Europe this season, having won all five previous games at the Baku Olympic Stadium. They will now look to claim a first away win at this level when they face Viking next time out.
