'Like Babies': Rooney Slams Man Utd Stars After Como Humiliation
Wayne Rooney slammed Manchester United's squad after Bruno Fernandes questioned tactics in the 4-1 loss to Como, with interim-turned-permanent boss Michael Carrick now winless in seven matches.
Wayne Rooney criticises Man Utd 'babies' as pressure grows on Michael Carrick...
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has hit out at the current squad, labelling the players “selfish” and accusing them of acting “like babies” after captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned the coaching staff's approach following the 4-1 Champions League humiliation against Como on Wednesday.
Fernandes admitted United struggled to put pressure on their opponents and fell into a “mood of defeat” after conceding just two minutes in, a result that has only increased the pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
United's capitulation in Como left them on the brink of another heavy defeat, with Joshua Zirkzee's late stoppage-time strike doing little more than softening the scoreline.
The fallout points to deeper unrest inside the dressing room. Earlier this month, defender Lisandro Martinez also voiced his frustration with the club's hierarchy following a 2-0 Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid, calling for greater investment to compete at the top level.
“When Martinez came out, I said this is an absolute nightmare because it will rip the dressing room apart,” Rooney told the United Stand podcast on Thursday. “That was the start. We've seen it now with Bruno and you're going to see it with more players because they don't want to take responsibility.
“You can say whether Bruno was right or wrong in what he said but you have to take responsibility on the pitch. You have to take responsibility as a group of players.
“These players, they're selfish. They don't care about their teammates, don't care about the manager, the staff or the fans, they care about themselves.
“If they're not getting what's right for them, they're like babies and just throw. their toys out of the pram and go and deflect the blame on to anyone else but themselves.”
Michael Carrick, a former United midfielder who shared the Old Trafford dressing room with Rooney, was initially appointed on an interim basis after Ruben Amorim's dismissal in January. He later earned a deal until 2028 after overseeing a sharp upturn in results.
The former England international is now under mounting pressure, with United winless in seven games across all competitions. They sit 20th in the Champions League standings and 13th in the Premier League.
