UCL: Man Utd Captain Fernandes In Subtle Dig At Carrick After Como Defeat
Bruno Fernandes said conceding early put Man Utd in a mood of defeat during their 4-1 Champions League loss to Como, their seventh game without a win.
Fernandes says Man Utd played with 'mood of defeat' in Como thrashing. “More brave under pressure...”
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes admitted his team lacked belief as their miserable run continued with a humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como on Wednesday.
United conceded inside two minutes and never recovered, with the result stretching their winless streak to seven games after another dismal display.
“We started on the wrong foot, and they scored very early,” Fernandes told TNT Sports. “Not much pressure on the ball, not many good movements with the ball, not many things going our way.”
The Portuguese midfielder suggested that Nico Paz's early opener for Como had a damaging impact on the visitors, who struggled to gain a foothold in the match. Paz added a second after Tasos Douvikas had doubled the lead, before Jacobo Ramon netted a fourth.
Only a stoppage-time strike from Joshua Zirkzee prevented United from suffering their joint-heaviest defeat in the Champions League.
“Conceding early makes us go into the game with a mood of defeat,” said Fernandes. “It's difficult to get out of that, trying to be brave, to have the ball and make something happen.”
“If we are not able to do that, it is going to be very difficult to get out of this situation.”
Fernandes also pointed to United's passive display without the ball, insisting Como were given too much time and space to control the game.
When asked if his remarks were a criticism of Carrick's tactics, Fernandes refused to blame his manager.
“That's on the manager and staff to see, not me,” he said. “Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable.”
