UEL: Besiktas End Palace's Perfect European Start in Four-Goal Thriller
Wilfred Ndidi and Junior Olaitan scored as Besiktas fought back twice to draw 2-2 with Crystal Palace in the Europa League league phase.
Olaitan stunner denies Eagles after Mateta ends goal drought...
Besiktas and Crystal Palace played out a pulsating 2-2 draw in the UEFA Europa League, a result that brings an end to the Kara Kartallar's four-game winning streak at home in continental competition.
Both teams came into the tie reeling from heavy domestic defeats, and while Vincenzo Italiano reacted to Besiktas' 2-0 loss at Trabzonspor by ringing the changes with nine alterations, it did little to quieten the electric atmosphere inside a packed Tupras Stadium.
The hosts were completely outplayed by Palace in the early stages, and boos briefly echoed around the ground after Jean-Philippe Mateta slotted his effort into the bottom corner just six minutes into his first start since late August, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Chris Richards went agonisingly close moments later, his powerful header crashing onto the top of Alexander Nubel's net.
Besiktas finally threatened through Oh Hyeon-Gyu, whose header drifted off target for the Kara Kartallar's first real chance, and although the hosts showed signs of improvement, Palace remained dangerous Tyrick Mitchell firing wide before Mateta tested Nubel directly from a corner.
The scoreline remained level, but Besiktas suffered a setback when Fabio Miretti was forced off with an injury in the 39th minute.
However, his replacement Salih Ozcan had an immediate impact, setting up the opener in the second minute of first-half added time as Wilfred Ndidi raced onto his perfectly weighted pass in behind to slot past Walter Benitez.
Palace came out on the front foot after the restart in response to going behind, and their positive approach paid off within seven minutes as Yeremy Pino steered Anan Khalaili’s low cross beyond Nubel.
Just two minutes later, Mateta capitalised on a loose pass from Tiago Djalo to fire home his first goal since the Conference League final and turn the game on its head.
Daichi Kamada then had an effort blocked by a teammate, but the Eagles were soon forced to sit deeper as Besiktas pushed for an opportunity to test Benitez.
With his side struggling to create a clear opening, substitute Junior Olaitan took matters into his own hands in the 73rd minute, unleashing a superb strike from outside the box into the bottom corner.

Besiktas’ celebrations were short-lived, however, as just five minutes later Umit Akdag was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Jorgen Strand Larsen, who attempted to continue but was eventually forced off.

Eddie Nketiah struck the side netting shortly after coming on, as Besiktas saw their perfect record in this season's Europa League league phase come to an end though they remain unbeaten in Europe despite losing two of their last three Turkish Super Lig games.
Palace, meanwhile, delivered a positive response to back-to-back defeats in all competitions to move onto four points in the Europa League.
