Given the attacking pedigree of both sides, it was no surprise the first half crackled with goalmouth action, yet for all their neat build-up play, neither team could convert dominance into a breakthrough.
Despite Ajax repeatedly cutting through Atalanta's midfield, their bid to break the deadlock was undone by wasteful finishing and sharp goalkeeping. Ajax maintained momentum after the restart, with the impressive Julian Brandt going close twice, first forcing Carnesecchi into a save from an acute angle before glancing a header narrowly wide moments later.
Having weathered the early pressure, Maurizio Sarri's side briefly looked like worthy adversaries to their Dutch opponents, with a strong penalty shout on the hour mark correctly denied as Davy Klaassen timed his challenge perfectly.
The home side's late flourish was as glorious as it was deserved, as Arokodare latched onto his own flick and calmly stroked his finish beyond Carnesecchi, before Abdellah Ouazane thrashed home a second from a tight angle to seal Ajax's first points in the Conference League league phase.
