Italy's football federation chief is set to lose his position but return as special administrator...

Italian Football Federation president Giovanni Malago is expected to be removed from his role and reappointed as a special administrator under a compromise devised by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) on Tuesday, bringing an end to weeks of governance turmoil.

The Olympic body's executive board voted unanimously to place the FIGC under extraordinary administration and put forward Malago to manage its day-to-day operations, pending final approval from its National Council.

The move provides a political way out after weeks of administrative tensions that followed Malago winning the federation presidency in June with more than 68% of the vote.

Legal inquiries ordered by the Olympic authorities had questioned the validity of the election on grounds of technical non-compliance, as Malago was not a member of the FIGC when he was elected.

Under the arrangement, Malago will vacate the presidency to enable the introduction of a special administration.

He will then take on a role tasked with steering the federation towards fresh presidential elections within three months, a period during which his formal administrative status can be regularised.

Malago will be eligible to run as a candidate in the election, which must be held no later than January 31 next year.

The leadership dispute comes at a critical time for Italian football, which is facing pressing structural challenges, including the venue upgrades needed to co-host EURO 2032 and the sporting fallout from missing three straight World Cups.
