Dominic Calvert-Lewin was the star of the show as Leeds United tore through Newcastle in the first half on their way to a 4-1 win at Elland Road. The striker’s goal was his eighth against the Magpies in the Premier League, a personal best.

The two teams began the night with identical unbeaten starts to the PL campaign (W1, D2), but Leeds led from the start and should have taken a 14th-minute lead when wing-back Jayden Bogle produced a clever effort on the turn, only for Lukas Hornicek to tip it away brilliantly.

Bogle, who netted in Leeds’ 1-1 draw at Brighton last time out, came close again 11 minutes later. His powerful strike was beaten away by the Newcastle goalkeeper.

Hornicek had no chance with Leeds’ opener in the 32nd minute. Ao Tanaka’s drive from the edge of the box took deflections off Sean Steur and Lewis Miley before looping into the bottom corner, with Miley given the own goal.

Leeds made it 2-0 just two minutes later. James Justin swung in a cross that Calvert-Lewin met with a powerful header, and it took a final touch off Bogle on the way in.

Calvert-Lewin should have had a second when Horníček spilled a cross straight to him, but the goalkeeper reacted brilliantly to claw it away. At the other end, Tarik Muharemovic then threw himself in to make a crucial block and deny Harvey Barnes.

Calvert-Lewin finally got his goal in first-half stoppage time. He muscled past Sven Botman before drilling low into the net, his third goal in four games in all competitions.

Hall tested Trafford within minutes of the restart. Newcastle were let off soon after too, with Stach blazing wide after Botman coughed up possession.

Leeds made it 4-0 just before the hour. Noah Okafor, who worked with Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle at Salzburg, struck a first-time effort from the edge of the box to get his first goal of the season.

Elland Road was in full voice, while the travelling fans were silent when Bazoumana Toure scored a 90th-minute consolation, his first Premier League goal.

The win lifts Leeds up to third in the early Premier League table. It’s the first time since 2001/02 they’ve gone unbeaten through their opening four top-flight games, and they’ve now lost just once in their last 13 league matches, winning six and drawing six.
