Five-star Brighton thrash 10-man Coventry 5-0 as Sky Blues stay goalless. Coventry rock bottom after 5-0 Brighton defeat and Awoniyi red.

Coventry City became only the second team in Premier League history to lose their opening four matches without scoring, after a 5-0 home thrashing by Brighton & Hove 

There was optimism around Coventry’s return to the top flight after 25 years, but the step up has been tough. They also nearly conceded within seconds of kick-off. 

Slack defending from Jay Dasilva at the back post saw him only partially clear a cross, straight to Diego Gomez. The midfielder lashed a powerful shot wide of goal.  

Brighton were on top in the opening stages and came within inches in the 18th minute. Kostoulas rattled the side netting before Yalcouye forced a tame stop from ex-Seagull Carl Rushworth.

Frank Lampard’s side did create something midway through the first half when Jack Rudoni headed just over from Ephron Mason-Clark’s cross.  

Rudoni was a threat again moments later, sneaking in at the back post and forcing Bart Verbruggen into a brilliant one-handed save.  

Coventry were on top by the 30th minute and Verbruggen denied Onyeka with another top save. Their lack of a goal was punished instantly though, as Kostoulas created a yard for himself and fired low into the bottom left.

The hill was always going to be steep for Coventry from that point, and it became almost impossible 10 minutes into the second half. Yalcouye beat Aurele Amenda to a loose ball, broke clear and slotted past Rushworth at the near post.  

It got worse instantly from kick-off. Taiwo Awoniyi caught Maxim De Cuyper with an elbow and was shown a straight red card.  

Brighton didn’t ease off, and they made it 3-0 from the spot. Pascal Gross converted after Bobby Thomas brought down Kostoulas in the box.  

With the result beyond doubt, Coventry’s only aim was to end their league goal drought. Even with 10 men they came close, but Verbruggen denied Brandon Thomas-Asante’s half-volley.

Brighton still had the last word though, as Lewis Dunk smashed in an outrageous fourth from 30 yards.  

Yasin Ayari then rubbed salt in the wound in stoppage time, tapping in a fifth to cap a near-perfect display. The win also snapped Brighton’s three-game winless run on the road in the Premier League.

Coventry, meanwhile, remain bottom of the table. Their next chance to get off the mark comes away at Nottingham Forest next Saturday.
