Defending champion Sabalenka survives Noskova thriller to make US Open last four...

Aryna Sabalenka battled back in a deciding tie-break to defeat Linda Noskova 7-6(1), 3-6, 7-6(10-7) on Tuesday and reach the US Open semi-finals for a sixth straight year.

The world No.1 and defending champion had not lost a set all tournament before meeting the Czech sixth seed. Noskova hit 18 aces and saved seven of nine break points, but couldn’t hold on after going a break up in the final set.

“What a battle. What an incredible player she is. I'm speechless right now because I was pushing myself to the limit this match,” said Sabalenka.

Sabalenka broke for 2-0 with a forehand winner into the corner that Noskova didn’t even chase. The Czech responded in the ninth game, hitting two heavy baseline groundstrokes to break straight back.

Sabalenka, who set a record of 21 straight Grand Slam tie-break wins earlier this year, looked completely at home in the first-set breaker. She raced through the opening six points.

Sabalenka’s power dropped in the second set and she couldn’t handle Noskova’s serve. A double fault then gifted the Czech a 4-2 lead.

After dropping the set, Noskova pushed to take control of the match.

Frustration boiled over for Sabalenka in the third when two double faults in the middle of the set handed Noskova another break. The Czech looked on course for a major upset, but Sabalenka steadied herself and broke back in the eighth to level.

She was back in her element in the deciding tie-break, sealing it with an ace and thanking the crowd for lifting her over the line.

“I honestly thought, 'this is it',” said Sabalenka. “It's a tough match, tough battle.”
