American ice hockey player Tyler Farmer, a former Aalborg Pirates forward in Denmark, has been handed a two-year ban after cocaine was found in a doping test.

Danish ice hockey is facing a doping case. Anti-Doping Denmark announced on Thursday that Farmer has received a two-year suspension.

The positive test came from a sample he gave on 27 December last year.

At the time Farmer was with Aalborg Pirates. He remained under contract with the North Jutland club last season before leaving the team.

According to Anti-Doping Denmark, Farmer told authorities he had been at a bar in Aalborg with teammates two days before the test.

He said he was bought two or three drinks by other people at the bar. Earlier that evening he had also had a couple of beers.

Farmer became unwell and vomited that night, and was later taken home by two teammates.

Farmer said he felt normal the next day but believed his drinks may have been spiked. Still, he did not report the incident to Anti-Doping Denmark when he was tested just before New Year.

The B-sample later backed up the original finding, and Anti-Doping Denmark made its final ruling last week.

In its decision, the agency said it accepted that Farmer did not take the substance on purpose or to gain a competitive advantage.

As a result, he received a two-year ban instead of the standard four-year suspension for a positive doping test.

The suspension started on 10 August this year. According to the ruling, Farmer has accepted the decision and its consequences.

The 28-year-old made 46 appearances for Aalborg Pirates, scoring 5 goals and providing 25 assists.

Aalborg Pirates have not commented on the verdict yet.
