World No. 10 Taylor Fritz edged 19-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar 7-6(7-2), 6-4 on Monday in a rain-delayed Washington final to win his first ATP trophy of 2026.

The third seed at the 500-level hard-court event needed five match points to get past the 24th-ranked teenager. It’s Fritz’s 11th career title and his first since Eastbourne last year.

Fritz took charge after dominating the first-set tiebreak, then raced to a 3-0 lead in the second with two early breaks of serve.

He handed the break back in the fourth game with a double fault on break point, and Jodar recovered from 0-30 to hold and cut the lead to 3-2.

But the Spaniard couldn't break again. He held for 5-4 to push Fritz to serve for the match, with a brief pause when Jodar needed treatment on his left wrist after slipping in the ninth game.

The last game was a battle. Fritz blew two match points at 40-15, then set up another with a huge forehand winner.

Jodar saved two more match points and even earned a break point, but Fritz answered with another forehand winner to stay in front.

After 1 hour 49 minutes, Fritz finally 

closed it out when Jodar missed two forehands to hand him the title.

Fritz, playing in his third final of the season, dropped to the court in relief before getting up to acknowledge the crowd.

“It was just pure relief - thank God I got it done,” Fritz said after the win. “It wasn’t really a celebration. It was more like, thank God it’s over. I can finally just lie down for a bit.”

The match had been pushed back from Sunday when heavy rain stopped play in the WTA final between Jessica Pegula and Alexandra Eala.

“It was very windy in the beginning. I felt like it was very hard to control the ball,” he said. “There was a lot of errors and mistakes early on, but I did a great job of just serving well the whole first set.

“Even though I maybe wasn't playing amazing, I still was holding and being in the match.

“I felt like I reeled it together really nicely in the tiebreaker. It was one of the better tiebreakers I have played in a while.

“I think I made all my first serves and put returns in the court. Just a very, very good breaker.

“Then I followed up, I played two very good return games to start the second set. That gave me the lead that I needed that I could hold onto for the match.”

Taylor Fritz lifts trophy 

Jodar fell short of a second ATP title after winning in Morocco back in April. Still, his run to the final means he’ll rise to a new career-high of world No. 15.

“It was a great tournament,” Jodar said. “I think overall I played great matches against tough opponents. I'll take all the learning from this week to try to add it to the next week.”
