PSG Retain UEFA Super Cup With Win Over Aston Villa in Salzburg

Enrique’s PSG win third Super Cup after 2-1 victory over Aston Villa. Young Madjo scores but PSG hold on to defeat Villa.

Doue strike helps PSG overcome Villa in UEFA Super Cup thriller...

Paris Saint-Germain kicked off their season with a UEFA Super Cup victory, beating Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg thanks to a second-half goal from Drsire Doue. It’s the first time since 2017 that a team has won the trophy in back-to-back years.

Nine of the players in PSG’s starting line-up also started the Champions League final against Arsenal in May. But with many of their Club World Cup stars only back in training last week, the French side needed time to settle into the game.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia looked sharp from the start. He put the Champions League winners ahead in the 20th minute, cutting inside before firing a powerful shot past Marco Bizot. That goal added to the four he scored against English opposition last season.

Luis Enrique’s side have now found the net in 29 straight competitive matches. They could have made it 2-0 when Nuno Mendes got in behind, but his cut-back somehow missed all four PSG players waiting in the box.

Villa almost made them pay right after. 17-year-old Brian Madjo, making his debut and becoming the youngest ever starter in a UEFA Super Cup final, headed just wide from a John McGinn cross.

The teenager had two more great opportunities as Villa, the Europa League winners, finished the half on top. He headed over from inside the six-yard box, then later hit the outside of the post after brushing off Willian Pacho.

Madjo finally got his reward right before half-time. He met another McGinn delivery with a first-time volley that flew into the roof of the net, making him the youngest scorer in UEFA Super Cup history.

Ousmane Dembélé came on for PSG debutant Maghnes Akliouche at half-time. Villa created the first chance of the second half though, with McGinn’s curling shot forcing Matvei Safonov into a save.

PSG went back in front just after the hour mark. Doué timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap and finished past Bizot. The goal was first ruled out for offside, but VAR overturned the decision.

George Hemmings had a golden chance to level it straight away on only his second start for Villa, but the 19-year-old fired right at Safonov.

With 17 minutes left, Warren Zaïre-Emery made a crucial block to stop Villa newcomer João Gomes. Then energetic sub Alysson whipped a dangerous ball across the six-yard box that just needed a touch.

In the end PSG held firm. The win means Unai Emery is still chasing his first Super Cup after four tries, while Luis Enrique has now lifted the trophy three times.

Two of those Super Cup wins have come against English clubs, including last year’s victory over Tottenham. PSG are also now unbeaten in 11 games against Premier League teams, with 10 wins and 1 draw.
