Naomi Osaka pulled out of the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati on Wednesday due to fatigue, weakening the women’s draw at the last big warm-up before the US Open.

The Japanese star, a four-time Grand Slam winner, had been showing strong form on hard courts lately. She made the semi-finals in Washington and reached the quarter-finals at the WTA 1000 in Toronto, which is still ongoing.

Seeded 11th, Osaka was set to skip the opening round with a bye. However, she said she didn’t feel ready to compete and decided to withdraw.

This marks her second year in a row pulling out of Cincinnati. She also withdrew in 2024, citing a scheduling change.

The 28-year-old last played in Cincinnati in 2024. That was during her return to the tour after having a baby, and she was beaten in the qualifying rounds.

Her best result in Cincinnati came in 2020, when she reached the final but finished runner-up to Victoria Azarenka.
