The New York Mets have dealt veteran starter Freddy Peralta to the American League-leading Tampa Bay Rays in a trade finalized Sunday. In return, New York received three prospects.
The Mets will get outfielder Aidan Smith, second baseman Emilien Pitre, and right-hander Gary Gill Hill as part of the deal.
Peralta, 30, is struggling through the toughest year of his career. Across 22 starts he’s 5-9 with a 4.99 ERA, a big drop after his breakout season with the Milwaukee Brewers.
In 2024, the right-hander topped the National League with 17 wins. He also set a career best with a 2.70 ERA over 33 starts.
Batters are hitting .264 against Peralta this year. That’s the highest opponent average he’s allowed since moving to the rotation full-time in 2021 he hadn’t been above .224 in that span.

Peralta’s last outing for the Mets came on July 26 vs the Dodgers. He gave up 2 earned runs on 6 hits over 4 innings. Afterward he said he figured “it probably is” his final game in a Mets uniform.
Before this year, Peralta was one of the NL’s most reliable starters. From 2021 to 2025 he posted a sub-3.90 ERA every season, and he racked up 200+ strikeouts in three straight years from 2023 to 2025.
The veteran finished fifth in NL Cy Young voting last season and picked up his second All-Star nod. After eight years with Milwaukee and half a season in New York, Peralta now joins Tampa Bay owners of the AL’s best record at 65-45.
What The Mets Get Back In The Peralta Trade
The 22-year-old outfielder is ranked No. 15 in the Rays’ system. In 59 minor league games this year 49 of them at High-A he’s hitting .209 with a .672 OPS. He’s added 10 homers, 40 RBI and 16 stolen bases.
Tampa Bay’s No. 27 prospect has broken out in 2025. The 23-year-old second baseman was promoted to Double-A and is slashing .308/.438/.447 with 5 home runs and 46 RBI. He’s also swiped a career-best 32 bases in 88 games split between High-A and Double-A.

The 21-year-old right-hander is the Rays’ No. 26 prospect and has struggled this season. Across 20 starts between High-A and Double-A, he owns a 4.49 ERA. In 108.1 innings he’s allowed 127 hits and 23 walks while striking out 87.
