Lazio Suffer Coppa Italia Upset As Gattuso Era Begins With Defeat

Lazio stunned by second-tier Mantova in Gattuso's first game in charge.
Miserable start for Gattuso as Lazio exit Italian Cup to Mantova...
Gennaro Gattuso’s tenure at Lazio began on a sour note Sunday, as the Serie A side were knocked out of the Coppa Italia with a 2-0 home loss to second-division Mantova. Last year’s finalists made an early exit.
The 48-year-old was appointed Lazio boss in July. He had stepped down as Italy manager four months earlier after the Azzurri failed to qualify for a third straight World Cup.
Gattuso spent 13 seasons at AC Milan from 1999 to 2012, winning two Serie A titles and two Champions Leagues as a player. As a coach, however, he hasn’t come close to matching that success yet.

The 2006 World Cup winner has also had stints in charge of Fiorentina, Valencia, Napoli, and Marseille.
Lazio were the only Serie A team among the 12 in the round of 64 to crash out of the competition.
The seven-time Coppa Italia champions reached last season’s final, but were beaten by Inter Milan back in May.
