Arsenal’s summer arrival Bruno Guimaraes is a doubt for Friday’s Premier League opener against newly-promoted Coventry City. Manager Mikel Arteta said the club has to focus on keeping the squad fit while trying to defend their title.
The Brazil midfielder signed from Newcastle United this month for a reported £75 million. Guimaraes, 28, was seen icing his leg after coming off during Sunday’s Community Shield victory against Manchester City.
Arteta gave an update on Bruno on Thursday. “It's evolving well, but let's see,” he told reporters regarding the midfielder’s fitness issue.
Injuries derailed Arsenal’s title bid last season, with key absences hurting them down the stretch. Kai Havertz, Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Jesus and several others all missed extended periods.
Arteta said squad depth will be key this year. “The more dominant we are, the bigger the margins, the better... we need to improve the availability of the squad in certain areas in order for those margins to become much bigger,” he said.
Arsenal sit third on the all-time list with 14 English top-flight titles. They’ve never defended the Premier League trophy, though they did win three straight league titles in the 1930s. Arteta, however, feels this campaign is different.
“I feel good. Different. Hopefully better. More excited than ever, hungrier than ever... I have no question that our players have the desire. Now it's something we have to do daily,” he said.

Arteta Addresses Arsenal’s Transfer Window and Squad Depth
Arteta confirmed Arsenal are looking to strengthen at the back amid reports they’ve agreed a £51 million deal with Aston Villa for England centre-back Ezri Konsa. “When we're ready to announce something, we'll let you know,” the Spaniard said.
He also shut down speculation over Myles Lewis-Skelly’s future, insisting the 19-year-old is staying. “100% sure” he would remain at the club, Arteta added.
The manager did concede that exits are possible, with Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Ethan Nwaneri all linked with moves away.
“It's a really, really tough moment... but you have to face it with a real honesty and transparency,” he said.
“We all know everything has a start and an end. When it ends, our job and duty is to do it in the best possible way, with respect and admiration for the player and the relationship.
“But at the end, we need to make difficult decisions.”
