Holger Rune’s return is delayed again. The world No. 12 withdraws from Hamburg and Roland Garros but eyes a grass-court comeback at Queen’s and Wimbledon.
Holger Rune cancels Hamburg Comeback, withdraws from French Open after knee irritation...
Holger Rune has pulled out of the ATP event in Hamburg set to start this weekend after experiencing a minor setback during rehab for his Achilles injury. He has also withdrawn from the French Open.
Rune won’t return to competition at the ATP 500 tournament in Hamburg, which begins Sunday, due to the Achilles tendon issue he first suffered at last year’s Stockholm Open, his team confirmed in a statement. The French Open will also be missed.
“I was really looking forward to making my comeback in Hamburg, and you all know that I love the clay and that Paris and Roland Garros have always been something very special to me, so it has not been an easy decision to make.”
“But for me it's not just about being able to complete a few matches, but a whole tournament, and I don't want to feel almost ready, but 110 percent ready when I start to play again,” he says.
The French Open kicks off on Sunday, 24 May, with the Hamburg tournament wrapping up the day before.
The call to withdraw came after a minor setback in rehab, according to Rune’s team. “In connection with the explosive and plyometric work, an irritation occurred in the knee, which has required a more controlled progression in the final sprint. This has advanced the overall schedule by a few weeks, as we did not want to take unnecessary risks,” it says.
Rune is now targeting a return during the grass-court swing in June, with the aim of being ready for the ATP 500 event in Queens starting 15 June.
After that, the plan is to compete at Wimbledon, which runs from 29 June for two weeks.
