Fulham have signed Spanish forward Gonzalo Garcia from Real Madrid on a five-year deal. The Premier League club and Madrid announced the move on Monday, with Garcia linking back up with former coach Alvaro Arbeloa at Craven Cottage.

The 22-year-old had his best season to date last year, netting eight times for Real Madrid, six of which came in La Liga. That included a hat-trick against Real Betis back in January.

Garcia has put pen to paper on a Fulham deal running until 2031. The club also have the option to extend it by an additional year.

Reports in Spain put the transfer fee at about €40 million, roughly £34 million. Real Madrid are also believed to have negotiated a 30% sell-on clause.

Fulham brought in Arbeloa as head coach earlier this summer. The Spaniard had been coaching in Real Madrid’s youth setup before stepping up to the senior role in January following Xabi Alonso’s sacking.

Garcia isn’t the only young Spanish player to swap Madrid for west London. 21-year-old attacking midfielder Cesar Palacios has also joined Fulham, after working his way into Real’s first team under Arbeloa over the past few months.

Madrid have since appointed veteran Portuguese boss Jose Mourinho to replace Arbeloa. The club are pushing through a squad rebuild after finishing two straight seasons without winning a major trophy.
