Future Hall of Famer Russell Westbrook announced his retirement from the NBA on Wednesday. He shared the news with a video compiling highlights from his career.
Westbrook played 18 seasons in the league from 2008 to 2026. He had his biggest impact during his first 11 years with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Westbrook was among the NBA’s top players in the 2010s. He won the 2016-17 MVP award with the Thunder, reached the NBA Finals once, and made four trips to the Western Conference Finals during his time in Oklahoma City.
“Sometimes you don’t even know when you’ve already watched the end,” the 37-year-old said. “You had to be there. And now it’s over.”
Westbrook also played for the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers, and Denver Nuggets. He joined the Sacramento Kings on a one-year deal last season.
With the Kings, he put up averages of 15.2 points, 6.7 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals. He entered free agency after that season and had not signed with a team.
Beyond his MVP award, Westbrook was a nine-time All-Star and nine-time All-NBA selection. He also led the league in scoring twice and in assists three times.

Westbrook became the first player in 60 years to average a triple-double for a full season, matching Oscar Robertson’s milestone. He then did it four more times in a span of five years.
Only three players in NBA history have averaged a triple-double across an entire season: Robertson, Westbrook, and Denver’s Nikola Jokic.
