Porto beat Torreense 1-0 on Saturday night at Estadio Cidade de Coimbra to win their 25th Portuguese Super Cup. Newcastle-linked midfielder Victor Froholdt scored the winner in the 38th minute against the reigning Portuguese Cup holders.

Asked about the victory over Torreense, Froholdt said the key was adding another trophy to Porto’s history.

“It means a lot to win another trophy. Being the club with the most titles in Portugal is very good, and we have to be proud of what we have achieved.”

“It's great to score, but the way we fought was incredible. I want to send a message to the fans. It was amazing to feel the support in the stands; it was incredible. We are the Portuguese club with the most trophies, with 88. It's a huge achievement, and we have to be proud.”

Reigning Portuguese Player of the Year Froholdt struck in the 38th minute to decide the game. Winger Pepe whipped in a pinpoint cross from just outside the box on the left.

The 20-year-old Dane timed his run into the area perfectly and glanced a brilliant header past the keeper.

Newcastle have reignited their interest in Froholdt as their top option to replace Bruno Guimarães should the Brazilian join Arsenal. Porto are asking for a fee near Froholdt’s €85m release clause, and any deal hinges on Guimaraes’ exit being completed first.

When asked about staying at Porto, Froholdt played down the transfer talk and said he’s focused on the challenges ahead.

 

“People talk about taking the next step, but for me, FC Porto is a huge club. I’m already focused on the next match, in the league.”

 

The reigning champions kick off their title defense at home, welcoming FC Alverca to Estádio do Dragão on Sunday, August 9.
