Arsenal begin quest for back-to-back titles with 3-0 win over Coventry.
Lampard’s Coventry outclassed as Arsenal cruise to opening win...
Defending champions Arsenal opened the 2026/27 Premier League campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City, ending the Sky Blues’ 25-year wait for top-flight football.
Both teams had been the most dangerous from set pieces in their leagues last season, so it was no surprise when Coventry went direct from kick-off and earned a corner inside the first minute.
That early corner was as good as it got for Coventry in the first half, as new signing Christos Tzolis helped spark the move for Arsenal’s opener.
The Greek winger dispossessed Milan van Ewijk on the left and played in Riccardo Calafiori, whose pinpoint low cross was swept home by Kai Havertz.
Arsenal kept pushing and made it 2-0 when Declan Rice surged forward and released Tzolis. His driven cross spilled from Carl Rushworth and Bukayo Saka was on hand to tap into an empty net.
Coventry were pinned back for the rest of the half but held on, and even had David Raya scrambling late on when Loum Tchaouna’s overhead kick clipped the top of the net.

Their resistance didn’t last. Early in the second half, Ben White’s cutback was prodded toward goal by Martin Odegaard, and Rushworth slipped as he tried to stop it, watching the ball trickle over the line.
Keen to get on the scoresheet after an impressive first half, Tzolis let fly, but his shot was blocked by a firm Matt Grimes intervention.

The rest of the half had the feel of a May title parade rather than an opener, with Arsenal knocking it around and Mikel Arteta bringing key men off to standing ovations.
The scoreline will fuel doubts that Frank Lampard’s fourth spell in the Premier League will be any smoother than his last three, but Coventry can at least say their toughest test is done.
Arsenal look as strong as ever, with Tzolis’ debut strengthening their hunt for back-to-back Premier League titles for the first time since the 1930s.
