Cameron Green Answers Critics With First Home Test Century Since 2020 Debut

Cameron Green ends home century drought

Cameron Green gets “clarity” from Shield form to hit 104 as Australia eye series bounce-back.

“Keeping It Simple” Green credits shield notes for maiden home test ton...

Australian all-rounder Cameron Green said on Thursday that returning to basics helped him finally score a century at home, after reaching three figures in the first Test vs Bangladesh.

Green headed into last week’s Darwin Test under scrutiny, with his spot in the team under question following a poor run of form.

He responded to the criticism with 104 in the second innings of the surprise nine-wicket defeat his first home Test century in 33 innings since debuting against India in December 2020.

The all-format player had scored a polished 136 for Western Australia back in March and jotted down “a few notes from what worked in that Shield game.”

“I went back to how I used to play, keeping it really simple,” Green told reporters ahead of the second Test against Bangladesh in Mackay starting Saturday.

“Over the last few years I have tinkered a bit and tried to find something and force it a little bit.

“It was nice to go back to (Sheffield) Shield cricket for a game and I went back to what I used to do. It felt really good and I have just continued that on.”

Green said he “got a bit of clarity” from that Shield match about sticking to his own style instead of trying to play like opener Travis Head.

“We're a proud group of cricketers, and obviously last week didn't go to plan,” he said.

“We've reflected, we've talked about it – we always have those conversations in real time as well, we didn't have to wait until after the game to have those conversations.

“If I can say anything, when this team's been challenged, we always find a way to bounce back in a big way. I'm looking forward to Saturday.”

“I think it was just going back to what actually feels really natural to me,” he said.

“Obviously Travis Head is an unbelievable cricketer, and he seems to be a guy that can hit shots from ball one. That's never really been me.”

Australia will make at least one change for the second Test after dropping struggling opener Jake Weatherald following Darwin, with Matt Renshaw brought into the squad.

Wicketkeeper Alex Carey, set to play his 50th Test in Mackay, said the team was determined to hit back and square the two-match series.
