Ghana were handed their first loss of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday night, going down 1-0 to Cameroon in their second Group C match at Casablanca’s Moulay Rachid Stadium.

Marie Gisele Ngah Manga’s first-half penalty proved the difference in a tight game. The result ends the Black Queens’ unbeaten start and leaves them with a must-win final group match against Mali on Thursday.

Ghana got off to a strong start, dominating possession early and pressing high, just as head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren said they would in his pre-match press conference.

The momentum shifted midway through the first half when referee Salima Mukansanga pointed to the spot after a long VAR check. She ruled that Ghana defender Benedicte Simon had handled inside the area.

Manga took the penalty and beat goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan Fiindib, sending her the wrong way and rolling it into the corner to put the Indomitable Lionesses ahead.

Doris Boaduwaa, who scored the winner for Ghana against Cape Verde in the opener, nearly grabbed a quick equaliser but couldn’t get past the Cameroon keeper from close range.

Cameroon took their 1-0 advantage into half-time, using stretches of possession to dictate the pace of the game.

At half-time, Bjorkegren looked to change things and brought on Evelyn Badu to give the midfield more attacking edge.

Ghana were better after the break. Captain Portia Boakye and Badu both had good chances to equalise but couldn’t convert.

The Black Queens thought they were back in it when Badu found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside in the build-up.

Cameroon stayed solid defensively until the final whistle. Their organisation and goalkeeping were enough to see out the 1-0 win.

The loss leaves Ghana on three points and in second place in Group C. Cameroon top the group with two wins from two and have already booked their spot in the quarter-finals with one game to go.

Mali are third on three points as well after edging Cape Verde 3-2 in the other Group C match on matchday two.

For the Black Queens, a win or even a draw against Mali at the Moulay Rachid Stadium on Thursday should be enough to take them through to the last eight.

But if they drop points in the final group game, Ghana risk an early and disappointing exit from the tournament.
