The Baltimore Orioles dealt franchise catcher Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday.

Coming back to Baltimore: catcher Carlos Narvaez, plus three top Red Sox prospects - No. 2 RHP Anthony Eyanson from Double-A, No. 4 RHP Kyson Witherspoon from High-A, and No. 5 OF Enddy Azocar from High-A.

Baltimore is also including catcher Jake Rogers in the deal. The Orioles had only picked him up from the Detroit Tigers in a trade last week.

It’s the biggest trade between these AL East rivals since 2014, when Baltimore acquired reliever Andrew Miller from Boston.

All-Star Catcher Brings Elite Bat And Injured List Status To Boston

Rutschman, 28, ranks among the most in-demand catchers in MLB. The three-time All-Star switch-hitter has rebounded offensively this year, posting a .251/.331/.433 slash line. He’s just 2 homers away from topping last season’s 8, and needs 11 RBI to double his 2025 total of 29 - all in 23 fewer games. Through 67 games in 2026 compared to 90 last year, the production has jumped.

Injuries have slowed him in 2026. Rutschman is on the 10-day injured list with left wrist inflammation, retroactive to July 19, and is expected to kick off a rehab assignment next week.

Despite the missed time, he’s still producing at a high level defensively and overall. Rutschman sits 5th among qualified catchers with a 2.3 WAR.

How Rutschman Became The Face Of Baltimore

Baltimore made Rutschman the No. 1 overall pick in 2019 after he turned down Seattle, who had drafted him in the 40th round back in 2016. Instead he went to Oregon State, boosted his draft stock, and gave the Orioles their franchise cornerstone.

From that point on, he was a fixture in Baltimore’s lineup and clubhouse.

The Oregon native debuted in 2022 and immediately made history. As a rookie he broke Cal Ripken Jr.’s Orioles rookie record for doubles, finishing with 35 to pass Ripken’s mark of 32.

In 113 games during his rookie year, Rutschman posted a 5.3 WAR, making him just the fifth catcher in MLB history to reach 5.0+ WAR in a debut season. He joined an elite group that includes Carlton Fisk, Mike Piazza, Thurman Munson, and Johnny Bench.

He ended the year hitting .254/.362/.445 with 13 homers, 42 RBI, and 4 stolen bases, which was good enough for 3rd place in AL Rookie of the Year voting.

A year later, Rutschman helped anchor an Orioles team that set an MLB record with 106 straight multi-game series without getting swept. On May 15, a year after the run began, his walk-off home run kept it going. The streak finally ended a week later on May 22, when Baltimore was swept by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Later in 2024, Rutschman earned his first All-Star nod and took home his first Silver Slugger. He set career bests across the board that year, batting .277 with an .809 OPS, 20 home runs, and 80 RBI over 154 games.

Last season Baltimore also showed where they’re headed by locking up fellow catcher Samuel Basallo on an eight-year, $67 million extension. The move made it clear the Orioles are building around young talent behind the plate.

This year Baltimore sits 54-58 and second-to-last in the AL East. Meanwhile their rival Red Sox are 60-51 in third place after a massive turnaround. Boston was 37-48 and at the bottom of the division before going 28-5 since June 25 - the best 33-game stretch in franchise history.
