Muchova outlasts Krejcikova in three-set thriller to reach Wimbledon last eight...
10th seed Karolina Muchova ended the Wimbledon run of friend and defending champion Barbora Krejcikova on Sunday, edging a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 thriller to book her spot in the quarter-finals.
The 29-year-old Muchova relied on athletic movement, crisp volleys, crafty drop-shots and punishing cross-court winners to get past Krejcikova, who is eight months older at 30 and currently ranked No.38.
Muchova said she was relieved to be doing the on-court winner's interview in the sunshine on Court Two. The two Czechs grew up together as juniors and are very familiar with each other’s games.
“She's not a Wimbledon champion by chance,” Muchova said of her opponent.
“She deserved that second set. I'm just glad I'm making the interview here with you.”
Following a tight opening, Muchova raised her intensity in the 12th game, pressuring Krejcikova’s serve and closing out the first set with a blistering cross-court backhand return. She finished with 50 winners compared to Krejcikova’s 24.
Muchova ground her compatriot down in a 16-minute sixth game of the second set, converting her fourth break point to take it.
Just when it looked over, Krejcikova - also a 2021 French Open champion - fought back to win five straight games and send the match to a third set.

Muchova regained her composure and earned a break in the fourth game of the decider as Krejcikova, who has struggled with injuries throughout her career, seemed to fade in the heat. Muchova sealed the win with a lobbed forehand winner, then shared a hug with her opponent at the net.
Muchova has matched her best Wimbledon result by reaching the quarter-finals. The Czech has also lifted two titles this year in Doha and at Bad Homburg last month, and said she is loving her tennis right now.
“I'm incredibly happy for the whole season,” she said. “It's nice to have some wins which give confidence.”
