96th MLB All-Star Game Set: Ohtani, Freeman, and Freeman Headline NL; Judge, Trout lead AL...

New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge and Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout were named as starters on Saturday for the 96th MLB All-Star Game.

The best players from the National League and American League will face off in the annual Midsummer Classic on July 14 in Philadelphia.

The American League holds a 48-45-2 edge in the all-time series after the National League won 7-6 in Atlanta last year.

Fans voted in two rounds to choose the starting position players for both squads. Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani led all NL vote-getters in round one to lock in the designated hitter spot, while Toronto’s Ernie Clement earned the AL starting job at second base.

Players will select the remaining 17 spots on each roster - eight pitchers and nine reserves - while MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred will name the final four pitchers and two position players for each league.

Joining DH Ohtani in the NL starting lineup are outfielders Brandon Marsh of Philadelphia, Andy Pages of the Dodgers, and Juan Soto of the New York Mets.

*MNL infield starters feature Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman, who earned his 10th career All-Star nod, along with third baseman Max Muncy. Atlanta’s Ozzie Albies and rookie catcher Drake Baldwin also start, as does Washington shortstop CJ Abrams.

For the American League, Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout was picked for his 12th All-Star Game. Trout is dealing with a hamstring injury but is aiming to return in time to play near his New Jersey hometown.

Joining Trout in the AL starting outfield are New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge and Minnesota’s Byron Buxton.

The AL infield starters are Clement, Tampa Bay third baseman Junior Caminero, Toronto first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., and Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers, whose team is set to relocate to Las Vegas.

Houston’s Yordan Alvarez earned the AL designated hitter spot.

NL pitchers named to the roster include Milwaukee’s Jacob Misiorowski, Philadelphia’s Cristopher Sanchez, 10-time All-Star Chris Sale of Atlanta, Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes, and Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

AL pitchers named to the roster include Yankees right-hander Cam Schlittler, Toronto’s Dylan Cease, and Boston’s Aroldis Chapman.

Two-way star Shohei Ohtani, who helped lead the Dodgers to back-to-back World Series titles and has won four MVP awards, is dealing with a biceps injury and isn’t expected to pitch in the All-Star Game.

Ohtani was voted in for both pitcher and designated hitter after his standout performances on the mound and at the plate.

This season Ohtani is 8-2 as a pitcher with a 1.79 ERA and 95 strikeouts across 85 2/3 innings. At the plate he’s hitting .288 with 18 homers and 50 RBIs in 85 games.

Ohtani is scheduled to make his last start before the Midsummer Classic on Friday against Arizona, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts doesn’t expect the 31-year-old right-hander to pitch in Philadelphia.

“We don't know that yet,” Roberts said.
