Fritz exact revenge on Shelton, sets Zverev Halle semi in all-tiebreak battle...

French Open winner Alexander Zverev is through to the Halle semi-finals. He’ll meet American Taylor Fritz after beating Raphael Collignon in straight sets on Friday.

The world No.3 and top seed took it 7-6(10), 7-6(3) on Halle’s lightning-fast grass. Neither player dropped serve the whole match in this classic Wimbledon tune-up.

Zverev needed two match points to finish off the Belgian, wrapping up the win in just over two hours in warm west Germany conditions.

“It was an incredible match, with a very high level of play from both players,” Zverev said, adding, “those two sets could have easily gone the other way.”

Zverev now faces Fritz in the semis as he chases his first ever grass-court title. It comes just weeks after he finally broke through for his first Grand Slam at Roland Garros.

The German was a Halle finalist back in 2016 and 2017, but form against Fritz is against him. He’s lost his last six meetings with the American.

Fritz earned his shot at revenge earlier Friday. He got past Ben Shelton in three sets, five days after Shelton beat him in the Stuttgart final.

World No.9 Fritz came out on top 6-7(5), 7-6(8), 7-6(3) after two hours and 45 minutes of tiebreak drama.

Shelton, ranked world No.5, had the edge last Sunday. He beat Fritz in Stuttgart to lift his first grass-court ATP title.

Two big-serving Americans went toe-toe and nobody faced a break point. All three sets were decided by tiebreaks.

Shelton took the opener. Grass-court specialist Fritz hit back in the second, saving match point to drag it to a decider.

Shelton slipped and hit the turf midway through the third set, then limped to his chair. He played on though.

Fritz gained belief as it went on and dictated the final tiebreak to close it out.

Later Friday, German Daniel Altmaier knocked out 4th seed Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 7-6(6), 6-4.

Altmaier’s semi-final opponent will be Frances Tiafoe. The American survived a thriller against world No.4 Felix Auger-Aliassime, dropping the first set before coming back 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(12) in a final-set tiebreak.
