Clara Tauson snapped a seven-match losing run to claim her first victory in over three months. The Dane beat French Open semi-finalist Diana Shnaider 6-4, 6-4 in round one of the Bad Homburg Open.

Tauson’s losing streak ended on Monday in Bad Homburg. The 23-year-old from Denmark defeated Russia’s Diana Shnaider, a Roland Garros semi-finalist, 6-4, 6-4 at the WTA 500 event.

With temperatures around 30°C in Germany, Tauson stayed composed and played smart, attacking tennis on grass. That clarity earned her a first win in more than three months after seven straight losses.

“It was really hot. I tried to focus on one point at a time. I really felt the heat, and beating Diana is a great achievement for me,” said Tauson in her winning interview, according to TV 2 Sport.

The Dane revealed in May she’d been dealing with two herniated discs, but on Monday she showed no signs of restriction. In fact, Tauson looked sharper and moved better than Shnaider for most of the contest.

Neither Tauson nor Shnaider found rhythm on serve early. That led to four break points apiece in the opening set.

Tauson still held from 0-40 down in her first service game, then broke Shnaider for 2-1 with a well-timed lob over the Russian.

After that, Tauson leaned on her serve. She fired four aces and kept constant pressure on a Shnaider who often looked a step slow.

The second set followed the same script. Tauson came out attacking and broke early after another smart lob to take the opening game.

Shnaider hit straight back after Tauson’s shakiest service game, but the Dane stayed locked in. Tauson broke again for 2-1 as frustration started to show from the Russian.

Tauson pushed further ahead by breaking for 4-1 and looked set for a routine win. A slip on the grass gave Shnaider an opening though, and the French Open semi-finalist pulled one break back to stay in it.

Tauson steadied herself with a strong first serve and closed it out. She sealed the victory in about 1 hour 45 minutes of encouraging tennis.

Next up for Tauson in round two is either Argentina’s Solana Sierra or China’s Zheng Qinwen.
