Netherlands Manager Ronald Koeman Resigns, Arne Slot and Ten Hag in Frame
After criticism for his tactical change vs Morocco, Ronald Koeman announced he’s stepping down as Netherlands boss. The former coach also praised wife Bartina’s support amid her illness.
‘I decided to step down’ says Koeman, quits Netherlands job after Morocco defeat...
Ronald Koeman has confirmed he is leaving his role as Netherlands manager after their round-of-32 defeat at the 2026 World Cup.
“I decided last night to step down as head coach of the Dutch national team,” Koeman wrote on Instagram, a day after Morocco knocked his side out on penalties.
Koeman came under heavy fire following the loss, largely for ditching the 4-3-3 shape that delivered two group-stage wins and a draw. He switched to a 5-2-3 for the knockout game, and the Netherlands were overrun by Morocco as a result.
After giving up a stoppage-time equaliser, they barely had possession in extra time and were lucky not to concede before the shootout defeat.
The coach defended his tactical call after full-time, insisting he’d do the same again. He also wouldn’t confirm if he wanted a new deal, with his contract set to end when the tournament did.
“... It hurts that my period at Oranje ends like that,” he said in his post. “We all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would write history. That didn't work out.”
“No one is more disappointed about that than me. As a head coach, you carry that responsibility. I have always felt that and I will always continue to feel that.”
In what looked like a farewell message, Koeman listed every club he’s managed and thanked his wife, who is dealing with illness.
“My wife Bartina has supported and encouraged me every day to finish my work as a national coach, despite her own illness process. That is a testimony to incredible strength. I appreciate her more than I’ll ever be able to put into words.”
The names being linked with replacing Koeman include Arne Slot, Erik ten Hag, Peter Bosz, and Pep Guardiola.
