Malo Gusto not satisfied just making France squad

France defender Malo Gusto admitted competition is fierce but said France’s sluggish first half vs Senegal showed fringe players they can push for a starting role. France face Iraq Monday.

“Honestly, I haven't spoken to the coach yet. My ‌role is mainly to be ready. I didn't...”

Malo Gusto is pushing for a spot in France’s loaded squad. Even with a set hierarchy in place, the team’s slow first-half showing in a 3-1 World Cup win over Senegal may have opened the door for fringe players. Gusto made it clear he plans to force his way into Didier Deschamps’ starting XI.

Gusto said Jules Kounde is still the No. 1 right back, but he added that competition for minutes is intense across the entire France roster.

“We know we have a squad of very ‌high quality and competition is important,” Gusto told reporters ‌on Thursday.

“I know Jules starts. I came here to play, that's why I'm here. The coach makes his choices. I'll be ready whatever happens and I'll give everything for the shirt whenever I'm on the pitch.”

The Chelsea right back said he hasn’t talked specifics about his role with Deschamps yet. But his mindset is simple: stay ready and be prepared whenever his number gets called.

“Honestly, I haven't spoken to the coach yet. My ‌role is mainly to be ready. I didn't start the first match, so I have to stay focused and I know that when the coach puts me on the pitch, I'll give everything and I'll make sure I show that I can play and that I can be in the starting 11,” Gusto said.

The 23-year-old said making the World Cup squad alone isn’t enough for him.

“My ‌mindset is that I'm in the squad and I want to play,” he said. “As a player, you want to take part. These are the competitions that drive me.”
